Standing before the Hungarian National Philharmonic this evening will be a conductor who has long taken part in the noblest traditions European orchestras have to offer. One of the founders of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Douglas Boyd spent nearly 20 years as oboist for the world-renowned ensemble, where regular conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Bernard Haitink and Roger Norrington collaborated with the world's leading soloists. A decade and a half ago, the Scott...ish musician, who was born in 1956, decided that he would prefer not to look back regretfully at his career. Instead, he put away his rosewood instrument in 2006 to focus on conducting. These efforts enjoyed support not only from Abbado and Harnoncourt, but from the legendary Paavo Berglund too.
He brings to Budapest a programme featuring both familiar and undeservedly infrequently played German Romantic creative works. A passionate collector of antiques, Brahms found the words to his Funeral Hymn for mixed choir and winds in a songbook dating from the early 16th century, while Mendelssohn's symphony-cantata is rarely heard in concert halls. Schubert's two-movement symphony, left unfinished for reasons that remain inexplicable today, fits in nicely between the works of the two Hamburg-born romantic masters, since the two latter composers owe much to its rich swelling melodies and to its delightful harmonies.
