The Hungarian National Philharmonic maintains close ties with the leading orchestras in neighbouring countries. A few years ago, for example, its participation in Bucharest's Enescu Festival brought great success. On this occasion, the ensemble will be hosting at its helm a Romanian conductor: Horia Andreescu. As an overture to the programme, they will be playing an orchestral piece composed in 2000 by his countryman Dan Dediu, who is 20 years the 1946-born guest conductor's junior. Entitl...ed Frenesia ('Frantic'), the work is easy to digest, melodic with pulsating rhythms, and highly varied in its arrangement.
Also included in the programme are two contrasting symphonies by a Viennese classical composer who occupies a pre-eminent position in the life and repertoire of the Hungarian National Philharmonic. Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 is the work of a young composer still finding his way, yet it already bears the hallmarks - a raw sense of humour, for example - an unmistakable masterpiece. As it turned out, this was the first opus in a genre that the composer would eventually reform. The Symphony No. 5 came into being after Beethoven's 'symphonic revolution' had already taken place: by boldly and brilliantly rethinking Haydn's form and structure, he also built a bridge to the romantic symphonic music of the age to come. The fifth is most certainly the best known of the nine symphonies - if not of all classical music - primarily thanks to its main theme, consisting of only four notes. Legend has it that the composer explained the motif with the words 'Thus Fate knocks at your door!'
