This concert gives us the opportunity to welcome an exciting musical personality: After studying at the renowned Gnessin Institute in Moscow from age five, Alina Ibragimova was brought to London by her ethnically Bashkir parents, also musicians. At age ten, she was enrolled at the Yehudi Menuhin School, where she played together with the institution's legendary namesake at one of his final concerts. In her art, therefore, Ibragimova merges the traditions of the Russian and European schools... of violin-playing, which is only one of the reasons why Bartók's Violin Concerto performed under the baton of Zoltán Kocsis promises to be a genuine treat.
In addition to classic 20th century works, the concert will also feature compositions from the leading figure of Czech national romanticism. While Dvořák's Symphony No. 3 is chronologically far removed from his famous New World Symphony, the singing sense of melody, the care-free optimism and the thematic variety are present to the same degree as they are in the later work. Completed in 1873, the three-movement Symphony No. 3 was conducted by Smetana at its world première.
The Slavonic Dances framing the violin concerto are the Czech master's 'Hungarian Rhapsodies', or more accurately, his 'Hungarian Dances', since they were inspired by the famous Brahms series. Dvořák composed two collections that actually follow principals similar to those Bartók used in writing the Violin Concert: he was not reworking the original folk tunes or tossing them into the compositions, but instead used them in a sort of filtered state, thereby preserving the essence of Czech music in the deservedly popular pieces.
