"The performance by the Kállai String Quartet was self-confident and impressive. They were sparing in the use of their power, on occasion deceptively so, but it was clear even before the fugue that this quartet harbours enormous energy. Ernő Kállai was at once a team player, binding band leader and expressive soloist. The others followed him as one, so much so that when a run needed to be split into four, no mistakes, slips or breaks could be heard during the transfer from one instrument to the ...next,” one critic wrote of the ensemble's debut, which took place in spring 2015 in the Solti Hall of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. The interpretations of the four musicians (Ernő Kállai, Géza Szajkó, Kálmán Dráfi and Balázs István), who have won a string of successful competitions, evokes the golden age of chamber music. This same golden age is also revived by the two masterpieces on the programme: Dvořák's String Quartet in F major, which is influenced heavily by the composer's years in America and the first movement of a string quartet by Schubert that remains unfinished.
