There can hardly be a more experimentally minded or multi-faceted symphony ensemble in Hungary than the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra founded by its director László Kovács some 30 years ago regularly collaborates with leading Hungarian jazz musicians to give crossover concerts. At the same time, the resident orchestra of the Miskolc International Opera Festival is at the forefront of contemporary music, as well as playing an active role in reviving the rarely played works of 20th cen...tury Hungarian composers such as Weiner, Dohnányi and Hubay. Where the opportunity presents itself, the orchestra also places emphasis on commissioning new works from young composers. Having premièred works by Péter Zombola and Zoltán Kovács, it will now perform a new work by Levente Gyöngyösi in the Palace of Arts as part of the same initiative. The best of the young generation of Hungarian jazz pianists, Kálmán Oláh has already performed on several occasions with the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra. Artistic director László Kovács has followed his career very closely over the decades, and it is no exaggeration to say that he regards him as one of the world’s finest pianists. For his part, Oláh has taken an intense interest in classical music from the jazz perspective – the fruit of which is his Passacaglia for orchestra and jazz trio, a set of variations composed in the baroque style. In what promises to be an exciting concert, these two works will be accompanied by one of the key pieces in the orchestral repertoire, the evergreen New World Symphony from Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, imbued as it is with the spirit of Afro-American spirituals.
