Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi was one of the central figures of Hungarian music in the 1980s and 1990s, writing himself into the golden annals of the country's performing arts as principal conductor of the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra (now Hungarian National Philharmonic) in the period following the tenure of János Ferencsik. The Hungarian public still vividly remembers his enthusiastic, emotionally rich interpretations, and the unaffected spirit and sense of immediacy embodied in his musicia...nship. His performances of Beethoven symphonies stood out as they were always performed with unrivalled fire, intensity and lyricism, and portrayed the classical Viennese composer's every facet with astonishing authenticity.
Celebrating his 75th birthday in 2015, Kobayashi has since enchanted audiences the world over. He enjoys a close relationship with the Czech Philharmonic as the first Asian to conduct the orchestra at the Prague Spring International Music Festival, and he remains an active participant on the Japanese music scene today. His performance with the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is made all the more special as it is 80 years since the ensemble's legal forebear began operation, in 1936, at the initiative and under the leadership of Ernő Dohnányi.
