Born in Russia and studying music in Austria, Kirill Petrenko earned worldwide renown as a conductor whilst being the musical director of the Berlin Komische Oper, and from September 2013, of the Bayerisches Staatsorchester, Munich. As an opera conductor, he is a greatly versatile musician, conducting the works of Mozart, Wagner, Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Richard Strauss, Shostakovich, Janáček, Bartók and Weill. He is always ready to work with directors with a special vision, such as Peter Konwi...tschny, Andreas Homoki, Willy Decker and Calixto Bieito.
He has worked as a guest conductor in Florence (Onegin), Vienna (The Magic Flute), Dresden (Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District), Barcelona (Queen of Spades), Paris (Don Giovanni), London (La bohème) and New York (The Merry Widow). The programme of the Budapest concert also includes Karl Amadeus Hartmann's last work, which premiered in 1964 with the solo sung by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. The singer now will be Christian Gerhaher, who was awarded the Rheingau Music Prize in 2009, in acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution to contemporary musical life.
