The town of Lahti is by a lake, some one hundred kilometres from Helsinki, and their city’s symphony orchestra became famous through its mastery of Sibelius. Since 2000, their headquarters has been the imposing modern concert hall, the Sibelius Hall. (The New York company, which worked on the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall was responsible for the acoustics here too.) The venue inspired the ensemble’s Sibelius Festival, which this year is mounted for the tenth time, led by the orchestra’s arti...stic director Jukka-Pekka Saraste. This grand concert series concentrates on the Finnish composer’s middle period, an example of which is the Lemminkäinen Suite, which was originally conceived as Wagnerian style opera but ultimately became an orchestral work. The Four Legends from the Kalevala is a set of four pieces, the best-known component of which was The Swan of Tuonela – based on an episode from the life of Lemminkäinen. The concert programme chimes with another anniversary: the version of the Finnish national epic known today was assembled 160 years ago by Elias Lönnrot, and the first Hungarian translation by Béla Vikár was published exactly a century ago. The concert presents a modernist work by the Finn Väinö Raitio whose work was completed in 1919. This is then followed by one of the most beautiful concerto works of the romantic period, Schumann’s Piano Concerto. This evening’s soloist Dezső Ránki exploded into world consciousness forty years ago with his interpretations of Schumann. This evening’s conductor is the music director of the Oslo Philharmonic, who has a close relationship with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
