Conductor: András Ligeti Featuring Gyula Orendt – vocals Weiner: Carnival, op. 5 Mahler: Songs of a Wayfarer Mahler: Symphony no. 1 in D major („Titan”) This is the orchestra’s first concert since the Music Academy building was closed for its current renovation, and the first in which the new director of the conducting faculty András Ligeti takes up the baton. The work features masterpieces written by young composers. Leó Weiner, the legendary Music Academy teacher, composed his witty... orchestral scherzo in 1907, a year after graduating. Mahler’s two works are also youthful. This Songs of a Wayfarer were written when he was twenty three, and he began his Symphony no. 1 while still an unknown conductor at the Kassel Theatre. This symphony is now part of Hungary’s music history: he completed it in Budapest where it was premiered in 1889, while the composer was still in his stormy but in terms of unwavering standards, probably unparalleled tenure as head of the Budapest Opera.
