Just as the relationship between Liszt and Chopin was contradictory, that between Liszt and Schumann was not entirely positive. The two artists first met in Leipzig where Schumann wrote a review in his own paper (Die neue Zeitschrift für Musik) of a concert Liszt conducted at the Gewandhaus. He was bowled over by the Liszt performance of Weber’s Konzerstück but had strong reservations about the wilful way Liszt had rewritten part of the last movement of Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, and also disag...reed with the interpretation. Despite acknowledging each other’s remarkable gifts, they later joined different allegiances within German music life. Schumann was regarded as a conservative, while Liszt was progressive (for example, Liszt regarded Schumann’s splendid Piano Quintet in E flat major as being “too Leipzig” in style). But it was not always like this: their mutual respect is shown by Schumann dedicating his Fantasy in C major to Liszt, who returned the favour with his magnificent Piano Sonata in B minor. The Symphonic Studies were composed in 1837 at a time when Romantic pianists were stretching the boundaries of piano technique. The title betrays the composer’s ambition of achieving a symphonic texture in his piano writing. We shall also hear the five posthumous studies which were first published in Brahms’s edition in 1890. The second half of the concert is given over to Liszt’s technically demanding Piano Sonata in B minor. Written in 1853, it is a single movement work lasting half an hour, and its formal structure pre-shadows Bartók. Our pianist has accepted a stiff challenge by performing both these works in the same concert. Károly Mocsári was born in 1962 and has been living in Paris for the last few decades. He has proven many times that he is a great and powerful performer of romantic piano music. Tickets: 1800, 3300, 4500 Ft
