In a fascinating range of Metropolitan opera broadcasts embracing the most diverse styles and periods in the genre, a little French colour naturally cannot go amiss. In Massenet's work rich in delightful melodies, we have the chance to enjoy a true star pairing in the main roles. In Jonas Kaufmann, we could hardly wish for a more suitable performer to portray the romantic hero searching for truth and beauty. The performance by the... German tenor at the production of the Opéra Bastille in Paris, preserved on DVD for posterity, may well serve as a benchmark for future generations. In the role of Charlotte debuting a French mezzo-soprano, Sophie Koch.
The figure of Charlotte's sister Sophie comes to life courtesy of New Orleans-born Lisette Oropesa, a young American soprano characterised in the New York Times as an artist who draws in audiences with an almost magnetic stage presence and a voice that is seductively silky and flexible. David Bižić debüts as Charlotte's betrothed, while Jonathan Summers appears as Charlotte's father.
This new production of the opera, staged after a gap of more than 40 years, will be conducted by Alain Altinoglu, a Frenchman of Armenian descent in his late thirties who has performed in many of the world's most prestigious opera houses.
