Menahem Pressler is one of a generation of giants of the piano hallmarked by the names of Vladimir Horowitz, Alfred Brendel, Van Cliburn, György Cziffra and Sviatoslav Richter. Born in Magdeburg in 1923, he "broke into” the United States with victory in the Debussy International Piano Competition in San Francisco in 1946. In 1955, he founded the Beaux Arts Trio, which soon became one of the world's most acclaimed chamber ensembles. The New York Times described the trio as "in a class by itself,”... while The Washington Post wrote: 'Since its founding 50 years ago, the Beaux Arts Trio has become the gold standard for trios throughout the world.' The trio finally bade farewell to the concert stage in 2008, since when Pressler has continued to perform as a soloist alongside the most renowned string quartets, and in recent times with the likes of the Berlin Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris and Amsterdam's Concertgebouw Orchestra. Here, he performs Mozart's last piano concerto, the most profound and personal of the composer's works in the genre. Camille Saint-Saëns dedicated his Symphony No. 3 to the memory of Franz Liszt in a work employing a full orchestra with two pianos and organ in creating its particularly grandiose and ceremonial effects.
