In his famous and controversial biography of Richard Strauss, Matthew Boyden wrote that it is not without reason that EinHeldenleben is regarded even today as one of the peaks of the symphonic repertoire, a benchmark of a conductor's expertise and a showcase for the orchestra's virtuosity. Strauss was only too aware that most orchestras wouldstruggle to overcome the violent counterpoints in the battle sequence, andthat he had never written such a difficult horn part. The number of music...ians required to perform the work includes more than 60 strings, eight horns, five trumpets, two tubas, quadruple woodwinds, offstageinstruments, a full complement of percussionand wind machine, while the violin solo calls for a virtuoso orchestra leader.
With regard to the solo part of Franz Liszt's Piano Concerto in A major, virtuosity is such a natural basic requirement that it is not even worth remarking upon; moreover, the creation of the composition's essentially meditative, lyrical mood and moments of chamber music fragility are what we expect from a poet rather than a virtuoso. GáborFarkas possesses a truly poetic temperament, and is "incidentally” a born virtuoso. On this occasion, the work will be accompanied on the programme by GergelyVajda's unusually orchestrated composition Csárdásobstiné, which was originally intended as a companion piece to the Liszt concerto. "Among the inspirations for Csárdásobstiné, I note, among others, the ‘colinde' by Bartók and Kurtág, Ligeti's Hungarian Rock and Sonata per sei by Eötvös,” explains the composer. "If I add all this obstinacy and Hungarian(-style) piano music tradition together, then Csárdásobstiné is, to paraphrase Ligeti, nothing but a ‘self-portrait with Bartók and Eötvös - where Liszt is also present'.”
