Variety is the spice of life - and so it is at this concert, which features a programme of works by Baroque, Viennese Classical and contemporary composers. The Baroque item on the menu is Vivaldi's most popular sacred work, which has been recorded at least a hundred times over the years, although - like many works by the "Red Priest,” as the composer came to be known - it was only rediscovered in the 1930s. Representing the Viennese Classical period is one of two duos by Mozart which was w...ritten to complete a series of duos by Michael Haydn, the younger brother of the more famous Haydn who also composed in Salzburg. The set of six duos was written for Prince-Archbishop Colloredo, Mozart being called upon to assist after Haydn's illness prevented him from completing the commission.
The American composer Lou Harrison, who passed away in 2003, blended the music of West and East in his work to highly striking effect. The culmination par excellence of this endeavour was his Concerto in Slendro, perhaps its composer's best-known work, in which the music of the oriental gamelan is alloyed with European musical influences. As its title suggests, the work evokes the Indonesian slendro scale, experimenting with pentatonic melodic structures. Harrison's First Concerto, likewise frequently performed, is a composition for flute and percussion written in 1939.
The life's work of Alan Hovhaness, an Armenian-American composer practically unknown in Hungary, assimilates many cultures. One of the most prolific composers of the 20th century, he left behind some 67 symphonies and a total of around 500 works on his death in the year 2000. His composition Koke No Niwa ("Moss Garden”) was written in 1960, while the overture to his opera The Burning House dates from 1959.
