Some genuine musical delicacies are served up at this concert; moreover, the kinds of works which ordinarily do not find themselves on the same programme, which in this case embraces five centuries of composition. In the first half, Roland Szentpáli - the orchestra's multiple international award-winning tuba player, who is proficient on all period brass instruments in the lower registers - will play some unusual historical instruments. The work by Jacques Charpentier he will perform on a saxhorn... invented by Adolphe Sax, while his own composition was written for string quartet and tuba to mark the birthday of Anton Meinl, owner of a 250-year-old instrument factory. The programme opens with a Cello Sonata by Paul Hindemith which is among his rarely played works, demanding exceptional technical skill from the performer.
