Claude Debussy was one of the pivotal figures of the first half of the 20th century, whose incredibly exciting and diverse life's work shaped the musical face of Europe even after his death. One composer whose work was influenced by Debussy was Jean Françaix, whose three-movement divertimento from 1974 we have the chance to hear at this concert conducted by Zoltán Kocsis, regarded as an authority on French music. Maurice Ravel's Sonata in C major is interesting for the richness of Hungarian moti...fs in its first and final movements. Closing the concert is an emblematic piece from the neoclassical period of Igor Stravinsky, a composer who brilliantly melded French and Russian musical traditions while retaining his own original voice. The work can be regarded as a 20th century counterpart of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos.
