Twentieth century French music is what defines this colourful programme, which is also supplemented by a quartet written for an exciting configuration of instruments by the host for the evening. The marvellous tubist and composer Roland Szentpáli was commissioned to compose the piece by the owner of the German musical instrument manufacturer Melton/Meinl Weston to mark the company's 200th anniversary. Jolivet is an exciting 20th century figure in part because of his belief in music as a primeval... art form that is a magical manifestation of human communities and their religious faith. The concerto work being played at the concert, with which Marcel Tournier greatly enriched the harp literature, was written in 1941. Closing the evening is Claude Debussy's String Quartet in G minor, a masterpiece that opened a new chapter in the history of chamber music.
