The sight of a Mozart symphony in G minor on the programme may bring to mind the popular melody of the composer's symphony with catalogue number K. 550. On this occasion, however, we will be hearing its sibling the more rarely performed 'little G minor” composed in the "Sturm und Drang” period. Ede Terényi's Jazz Harp Concerto undoubtedly promises to be the most interesting part of this concert. The composer from Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca, Romania) has already paid homage to a variety of comp...osers in his work, and on this occasion doffs his cap to Gershwin. This is a departure from the conventional lyrical tone of harp concertos, employing the double bass as a solo instrument and assigning a leading role to the xylophone.
We know from his writings that Schumann was greatly inspired by Cologne Cathedral. Anyone who has visited this iconic landmark and experienced its vast scale will understand exactly why the composer was so enthralled. The concept for his Symphony No. 3 - which Schumann committed to parchment very shortly after moving to Düsseldorf on the banks of the Rhine - came to him on sight of the cathedral, so it is little wonder that the hidden programme behind the work, which unusually extends to five movements, is also closely connected to the cathedral.
