Paris in the early 20th century held a passion for exotic Oriental cultures, particularly the intellectual products of Tsarist Russia. This explains the popularity of the Ballets Russes in the French capital, which we can thank for the creation of a huge array of new works. Among these, many were written by Russians, but there were also examples of collaboration with local composers. The company commissioned Paul Dukas to write his ballet La Péri, which tells the story of the Persian magus Isken...der's quest for the flower of immortality. In light of the Russian cultural "invasion”, it is no coincidence that Sergei Prokofiev also chose to live in Paris around the same time. And yet he had successes at home as well, for example with his Piano Concerto No. 1, which won the Anton Rubinstein Prize. This was not long before the outbreak of the First World War, in which the Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein - older brother of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein - lost his right hand. This did not spell the end of the pianist's career, however, as he continued to commission pieces written only for the left hand. One such piece is Maurice Ravel's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, which incorporates the Gregorian Dies Irae melody, also one of the main constituent elements of the Danse macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns.
