This programme features works by two key composers of the 19th century. The interesting aspect of the Piano Concerto No. 1 by Johannes Brahms is that it was originally intended as a symphony, and was only transformed into a concerto on the death of Brahms' friend Robert Schumann. Music historians cite Brahms' Symphony No. 2 as the most important inspiration for Dvořák's Symphony No. 6 - drawing particular attention to similarities in the first and final movements. However, Dvořák's work is... certainly rendered unique by the presence of the Czech national style, which would later become a defining element of his compositions.
Of the many competition victories of Gergely Bogányi, his first prize in the International Franz Liszt Competition in Budapest in 1996 stands out. In 2000, he was awarded the Liszt Prize, and in 2005 became the youngest recipient of the Kossuth Prize. Of his own work he says: "I feel that the public buy tickets to my concerts because something always happens. Performing art isn't something you can teach, as it's the art of the moment. I see a concert as a sacred place, where the artist plays and recreates a piece for the first time on every occasion. On stage, I try to forget what I know until then, so that the wonder of music - which is always different - can be born.”
