This exclusive season ticket series of three concerts by Dezső Ránki represents a kind of self-portrait of the artist. Several aspects of the Artist of the Season are displayed in these concerts, which feature music that is dear to Ránki, but naturally without revealing the full picture. At the last evening in the series, he will play only piano sonatas by the great master of the Classical Viennese School, Joseph Haydn, including his last great works, as well as a comparatively early work.... Although these compositions, in the knowledge of Beethoven's extreme passions or the storms of the Romantic period, may not belong among the most spectacular in the musical canon, Ránki never seeks surface dazzle. The strength of his art perhaps lies precisely in the manner that he captivates listeners with his intensity, initiating them into mysterious, secret worlds. These can only be explored in the company of a musician of Ránki's calibre, as only he can guide us through all the nooks and corners, recognising beauty otherwise hidden from view.
Ránki's own ars poetica, in the spirit of which he can accomplish anything, can perhaps be summarised with the words: clarity, unaffectedness, technical mastery and artistic humility. His meticulous approach extends not only to the interpretation of every individual note and phrase, but to the compilation of each performance. When planning a concert programme, he weighs numerous factors; for example the mood and structure of each composition, the affinity of the various keys and the development of each piece's character, all of which combine to form the arc of a concert. "It isn't enough to just perform the pieces one after another, since one work can easily ruin the effect of another,” he says. "I try hard to ensure that a concert programme forms an organic whole.”
