Dezső Ránki studied under Pál Kadosa and Ferenc Rados at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, graduating in 1973. At the age of 18, he won first place at the International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau, and has performed worldwide ever since. Among others, he has performed with the Berlin and London Philharmonics, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Orchestre National de France, as well as such notable conductors as György Solti, Sándor Végh, Lorin Maazel and Zubin Mehta. Since 1985, he has performed four-hands pieces and piano duos with Edit Klukon, and they have toured to Berlin, Paris, Tokyo, New York and London in recent years. Their joint recordings contain compositions by Liszt, Satie and Barnabás Dukay.
Dezső Ránki was presented with the Liszt Award in 1973, the Kossuth Prize in 1978, the Budapest Metropolitan Artist Award in 1982, the title of Artist of Merit in 1984, the Bartók-Pásztory Award in 1988, the Exceptional Artist title in 1990, and the Prima Primissima award in 2005. He received the Grand Cross Star of the Hungarian Order of Merit in 2006 and his second Kossuth Prize in 2008.
