Grigory Sokolov was only five years old when the Russian music world first noticed his extraordinary talent. Born in Leningrad, he attended a special music school there, and then in 1960 became a student at the conservatory in his home city. In 1966, now 16, he won the third International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition via a unanimous decision from a jury headed by Emil Gilels. His interpretations are distinctive in that they make very little use of the pedals, and his keyboard technique is... of the highest order, allowing him to elicit an immense variety of sounds from the piano. His playing is poetic and rich in quite unique techniques, making even the best-known pieces sound amazingly fresh when he plays them.
Sokolov has played at Vienna's Musikverein, Berlin's Philharmonie, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, New York's Carnegie Hall, as well as in London, Salzburg, Tokyo, Paris, Rome and Madrid, partnering with such illustrious orchestras as the New York, Dresden, Warsaw and Munich philharmonics, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Radio Orchestra and Milan's La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra and collaborating with many of the world's top conductors. He is today one of Russia's most celebrated artists. His wide repertoire, ranging from Bach to Schönberg, the originality of his musical interpretation and the precision of his playing style enrapture audiences and critics wherever he plays.
