Simon Keenlyside is one of the best-known British baritones. Born in 1959 into a musicians' family, at the age of eight he became a member of the famous choir of the Cambridge St. John's College School. He went on to study zoology at the University of Cambridge, and then singing at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. His master, John Cameron, instilled in him a love for lieder and German poetry. He made his debut as an operatic singer in 1987, and reviewers immediately found his p...erformance astonishingly mature. In 1986 he continued his studies with Rudolf Knoll in Salzburg, on a Richard Tauber Scholarship. He first performed at the Hamburg Opera House in 1988. While a member of the Scottish Opera's company until 1994, he already made his debut at Covent Garden in 1989, and then on stages across Great Britain and in San Francisco. He first delighted the audience of the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1996. Over the past two decades he has sung in almost all leading opera houses in the world. A multi-award-winning performer, his repertoire extends from Purcell to Thomas Adès and other contemporary composers.
