On 3 October 2011, Steve Reich, one of the world's most celebrated composers, celebrates his 75th birthday. The occasion will be marked across the globe by concerts and festivals in top concert venues from New York to London, Paris to Porto, and Stockholm to Krakow. The programme for the concert to be held in Budapest spans a period of almost 40 years. The Triple Quartet, premièred in 1999, was written for the Kronos string quartet and was heavily influenced in its tone by Bartók's String Quart...et No. 4. The Double Sextet, completed in 2007, is one of Reich's most recent compositions and was awarded with a Pulitzer Prize two years later in 2009. The interval will be followed by Drumming, one of Steve Reich's most monumental pieces. Composed in 1970/71, it catapulted Reich to world fame immediately after its 1971 première. Drumming is the product of Steve Reich's exploration of West Africa in 1970 combined with his earlier efforts at composition. Its hypnotic effect is the result of an incredibly complex sound constructed from the simplest musical elements. Reich has maintained close contact with several Hungarian orchestras and groups for decades. His most recent visit to Hungary came in 2009 for the première of a work written for the Amadinda Percussion Group. Presented by: Palace of Arts
