At its last Müpa Budapest concert of this year's concert season, the Szent István Philharmonic will perform one of the most grandiose, and most dramatic in tone, funeral masses ever written: Verdi's Requiem.
Despite its religious content, the Italian Romantic composer's emblematic work is often performed in concert halls, as Verdi's composition goes far beyond the ceremonial framework, with his operatic style clearly shining through the movements. The composer uses the tools of performance in a variety of configurations to represent the different emotional aspects of the central theme of mourning: introversion, anger, and finding solace... The ingenious instrumentation and the musical themes, which ...penetrate deeply into the listener's soul, faithfully convey the relationship of a fallible human being to a power greater than himself.
