An adaptation of the performance of the Grand Theatre of Geneva Saturday 27 March 2010, 18:00 Music: Ambroise Thomas Libretto: Michel Carré, Jules Barbier Festival Theatre Running time: 3 hours and 43 minutes, with 1 intermission Ophelia: Natalie Dessay, Gertrud: Jennifer Larmore, Laertes: Toby Spence, Hamlet: Simon Keenlyside, Claudius: James Morris Featuring: Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Choir Conductor: Louis Langrée Directors: Patrice Caurier, Moshe Leiser Ambroise Thomas..., born in Metz in 1811, was 21 years of age when he was awarded the Grand Prize of the Rome Conservatory, which was followed by three years of studies in the Italian capital. During this time, his musical thinking was irrevocably captivated by the music of Mozart, Beethoven and by Italian melodiousness. His first, breakthrough success both in his homeland and abroad (in France) was his opera Mignon, an adaptation of Goethe’s tale. Hamlet was composed in 1868, based on Shakespeare’s drama and its French adaptation by Dumas. After Thomas’ death, the work in five acts disappeared from the opera repertoire. It was rediscovered in the 1980’s and has been regularly staged at the great operas worldwide. The title role of the piece is sung by London baritone Simon Keenlyside, who has often performed at Met since his debut in 1996. Natalie Dessay, in the role of Ophelia, has made a roaring success lately in La Sonnambula, not only in New York but, through the transmission, also in Budapest (and numerous other cities). The famous richly resonant and brisk coloratura mezzo soprano of Jennifer Larmore, familiar from her well-known bel canto and oratorio recordings, is now to be shown off in a late Romantic musical environment.
