The Vienna Philharmonic has been a regular guest at the Palace of Arts for years. Regarded as one of the worlds top three orchestras, and counting several Hungarian musicians among its members, the ensemble takes to the stage of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall on this occasion to perform a selection of classics from the symphonic repertoire. Following recent appearances with Zubin Mehta and Michael Tilson Thomas, the over 170-year-old orchestra welcomes a top representative of anothe...r highly significant conducting school for this concert. General and artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg and principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, Valery Gergiev began his extraordinarily rapid rise on the international scene as an outstanding and authentic interpreter of Russian music in the years after 1990. Known for his passionate conducting style and meticulous attention to detail, Gergiev is active in multiple genres, be they symphonic music, ballet or opera.
The programme is bookended by Wagners sweeping overture and Mussorgskys unique suite, originally composed for piano but naturally performed here in the brilliant arrangement by Ravel five decades later. Between these two works, we will hear Debussys impressionistic musical triptych La mer (The Sea), composed under the influence of Mussorgsky.
