"There where you are not, there is happiness” - reads the closing sentence of one of Schubert's most idiosyncratic Lieder, entitled Der Wanderer. A restlessly wandering spirit throughout his very short life, Schubert - who passed away at the age of only 31 - characterised himself more astutely than any psychiatrist could when he said: "Whenever I wanted to sing of love, it turned to pain. And whenever I wanted to sing of pain, it turned to love.” His vast life's work stands as a mystical m...arvel. The boundless horizons of his imagination, at a humdrum period and within a petit bourgeois milieu, cannot be reasonably measured. (András Batta)
For the closing concert in the series, we present some of Schubert's bolder, more unrelenting works, which sometimes even seem alien and in which - in a manner of speaking - the "modern” Schubert emerges. These include the String Quartet in G major, the Impromptu in F minor, the anomalous Goethe Lieder (Erlkönig, Meeresstille, Ganymed), and Heliopolis.
