The works of Russian composer Dmitry Borisovich Kabalevsky are full of sparkling ideas, while at the same time drawing deeply and enthusiastically on the melodies of Russian folk music. The opera Colas Breugnon, based on the novel by Romain Rolland, premièred in Leningrad in 1938 but has since faded into obscurity. The overture, however, continues to be performed to this day, including as a transcription for wind ensemble.
The version for strings of the slow movement of Samuel Barber's Str...ing Quartet (op. 11) can bring even insensitive listeners to tears. Struggling with a lack of self-confidence and shunning publicity, the American composer travelled to Rome on a scholarship, where he wrote his famous Adagio with the encouragement of Arturo Toscanini.
Armenian composer Alexander Arutiunian gained fame for two works: the Cantata of the Motherland and the Trumpet Concerto in A-flat major composed in 1950, which soon became popular for its virtuosity, exotic melodies, sometimes jazzy rhythms and exploiting of the diverse sounds of the trumpet.
Dutch composer Johan de Meij, whose works are performed by famous orchestras the world over, prepares transcriptions mainly for wind ensemble besides writing his own compositions. His Symphony No. 1 is based on Tolkien's trilogy The Lord of the Rings.
