We are inviting you on a journey the like of which you won't experience every day as we relive exciting moments from days long gone in the company of the Alba Regia Dance Ensemble. Saint Stephen, King Matthias, Mujkó, György Varkocs, Petőfi… who could fail to remember the statues of the royal city of Székesfehérvár? Walking along the street, it is hard to imagine how closely these public works of art are associated with the history of Székesfehérvár. Each representing their own era of hist...ory, these statues are the perfect props to guide the audience through the close connections between the history of European dance as a whole and Hungarian peasant traditions from Saint Stephen to the present day.
Hungarian folk dance bears the hallmarks of the historical dance culture of the whole of Europe. The folk dance tradition of the Hungarian peasantry continued tradition of the elegant procession dances of the Renaissance courts, as well as of the jumping styles of the Transylvanian legényes men's solo dances. Our peasant dances with props are likely to have developed from the weapon dances of 16th and 17th century soldiers. Our national dances - the csárdás and verbunkos - originally served to entertain the nobility in the ballrooms of the reform era of 1825-1848, but later gained increasing popularity in the inns frequented by the village peasantry.
Did you know that singing dulls our sense of fear? This is why soldiers marched into battle to the sound of music and song. This programme offers a glimpse into the lives of our soldiers of the great wars, from ceremonial parades and marches to the horrors of battle, while we will also hear how Hungarian, Swabian and Serbian soldiers would sing each other's melodies in the name of peaceful cohabitation.
In addition to bringing joy to the hearts of those from Székesfehérvár, we hope this dance play will also awake the interest of anyone wishing to get to know the great moments of our history through dance.
