Seclusion and isolation. Freedom and boundlessness. The new production of choreographer Pál Frenák concerns the walls within and without, our barriers and ways to cross them, whether they be psychological, historical, social or physical obstacles. What is it that confines us, and separates us from others? What can open one, and dismiss barriers? How does imagination work? How do we construct new, parallel realities so as to make our present liveable, or else to rewrite our past?
In ...addition to the motif of flying, which has intrigued him for years, the choreographer has been inspired by Birdy, American novelist William Wharton's novel of 1978, Alan Parker's filmic adaptation of the same title, and Raymond Depardon's documentary, San Clemente. The dancers are joined on the stage by a female DJ from New York, so the acoustic world of the production is also the result of international cooperation. The electro-acoustic music of Fabrice Planquette, the French composer who regularly cooperates with the company, is complemented this time by interludes of classical music, taken in particular from Johann Sebastian Bach's cello suites, performed live on stage by a highly gifted, young Spanish cellist. As is to be expected, the new production offers an exciting and original experience of space.
