With its mixture of visual art, world music sounds and virtuosity, the latest production of the Duna Art Ensemble immerses the audience in the enchanting world of folk dance theatre. The aim is to stimulate thought, to relax and calm the viewer, and of course to entertain. The conceptual theme of the performance is the tree, the world tree symbolising life and death, fertility and abundance, love, progress, knowledge, the cross, and at once the shamanic tree, the tree of the soul, a mystic...al tree of time and history… it is all these things. The tree is the link between two worlds, the sky and the earth. It tells of our everyday lives, our infinite rituals and myths, the eternal cycle of life and our embattled existence. The tree is a column supporting the world; it protects, uplifts, calms and embraces.
This dance theatre production bears the hallmarks of authenticity, while at the same time retaining an innovative and contemporary spirit that raises folk dancing and music to the same plane as elements of contemporary theatre. A modern interpretation of traditional motifs does not detract from their value; on the contrary, it sustains them and brings them to life. The backbone of the production comprises Balkan dances from Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and Romania.
