As in its previous productions, this show built around references to the oeuvre of Zoltán Kodály by the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble brings a radical vibrancy to tradition, always in symbiosis with the modern forms of expression of our current era. The story unfolds in the little events of an imaginary community, framed musically in the compositions of Zoltán Kodály and his contemporary, Béla Bartók, as well as folk songs that Kodály collected. The evolving scenes trace the development - ...and loss - of human relationships, joys and sorrows, as well as the rituals of both everyday life and celebrations. Through richly nuanced, lyrical-associative images, and stage action that playfully alternates places and times, we reach the denouement, the cathartic declaration of the glory of human life. The well-known works by Kodály that Dance Canon quotes from include Háry János, the Kálló Double Dance, Psalmus Hungaricus, Nine Pieces for Piano, Seven Pieces for Piano and Evening Song.

The archive images used in the performances are taken from the photography collection of the Hungarian Museum of Ethnography.

A joint production of the Budapest Spring Festival, the Hungarian House of Traditions - Hungarian State Folk Ensemble and the National Dance Theatre.

Presented by: National Dance Theatre
