Who wouldn't want to know the inner workings of a symphonic orchestra, how it prepares for a concert, what happens at an opera or ballet rehearsal, how folk music ensembles practice, or how a day in the life of a jazz band unfolds? For the first half of these two-part concerts, the audience - aided and abetted by the host - catches a glimpse into the everyday life of the rehearsal room and the musical processes of instructions and explanations, and the repetition of individual parts over a...nd over again. After the interval, the performers will appear dressed for the stage, or rather in fancy dress, inviting the audience to hear and watch a complete performance of the work, parts of which they already know intimately.
In the spring of 1747, George Frideric Handel received a commission to write music for a festive occasion, for which the planned high point was a fireworks display in a London park. The king wanted as many martial instruments - i.e. brass - to be used in the work as possible, and expressed his hope that it would contain no strings. The full rehearsal of the piece attracted huge interest, with a crowd of 12,000 completely paralysing traffic in the centre of London. At the performance proper a few days later, though the fireworks were a damp squib, the music itself proved an enormous success, and the Music for the Royal Fireworks has remained one of Handel's most popular works ever since. This concert not only reveals the secret of this popularity, but also permits a glance behind the scenes of cooperation between a composer and a Baroque orchestra.
