This series presents some of the great epochal changes in music history. Our journey through time has taken us from Florence, the birthplace of Baroque music and opera, to the cradle of symphony music in Mannheim. The first concert of spring explored Vienna, where Bethoven, the great pioneer of the Romantic period, made his music. Our last stop takes us across the Atlantic to New Orleans on the south-eastern shores of the great melting pot of cultures, the United States.
At the beginning ...of the 1900s, one of the most distinctive musical genres of the 20th century began its triumphal progress from New Orleans, a city with a unique atmosphere at the mouth of the Mississippi river. Developed and played by the Afro-American, Creole and white musicians who lived there, and rooted in African traditional music, this rhythmic and improvisational musical genre came to be known as jazz. The astonishing story of its evolution, from ragtime and Dixieland to classic jazz and blues, is presented in this concert by the best-known Hungarian interpreters of the styles of that period, the Benkó Dixieland Band.
