The title of Tchaikovsky‘s Variations on a Rococo Theme is misleading since its basic theme is in reality not of Rococo origin but an original melody by the composer himself. The gallant dance-paced theme introduced by the solo cello, and then proceeding over eight increasingly rich variations, evokes the world of the Rococo musical period which the composer so admired. The work was dedicated to Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, the German-born cellist who settled in Russia. It was due to the latter’s effort...s and alterations that the piece became so extraordinarily popular, and it is his version with seven variations that is played almost without exception in concert halls today.
