Who hasn't tried beating on a pot, using a saucepan lid as a cymbal, or drumming on the table with our fingers? Primitive man started the same way, only the tools were different. In numerous corners of the world, percussion remains to this day a fundamental and primary means of creating music, but in Europe it was long forced into the background. Rhythm instruments were used as mere accompaniment in the dance music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, while the drum and the tambourine remai...ned alien to the world of "classical” music for centuries. Mozart evoked the hubbub of the Janissaries in his Turkish-styled pieces using timpani, bass drum, triangle and cymbals, but the Romantic composers of the 19th century used little percussion beyond these instruments.
The 20th century brought a decisive change as the rapid development of this group of instruments began. With this speedy expansion, composers discovered the range of untapped opportunities inherent in the percussion family. These instruments have been perfected to such a degree today that, irrespective of period or genre, they can be used to play any kind of music from Renaissance madrigals to Bach's works for solo violin. The percussion family is without doubt now the largest family of instruments in a symphony orchestra. The percussion section is like a magical child's playroom: one only has to touch the objects within and they burst into tune - and this presentation will offer the chance to do so. These instruments, after all, have a soul too.
