Careers can depend on chance: Bettina Tóth first encountered the harp when a music teacher living in her neighbourhood asked her whether she'd like to try out the instrument. She seized the opportunity and has lived for this extraordinary instrument ever since. Conductor Gergely Kesselyák has described her as an "angel come down to earth”, although Tóth herself has still not decided whether to be a professional harpist or a chemist. At this relaxed concert with a family atmosphere and inte...rspersed with conversation, she will perform excerpts from a concerto by Reinhold Glière, a Russian composer of German-Polish ancestry, while Filibert will presumably have plenty of questions to ask about this instrument with its wonderful sound and copious strings.
Nineteen-year-old violinist Zoltán Sándor, an outstanding young exponent of a considerably more familiar instrument, has been living a cherished childhood dream since entering the class for exceptional talents at the Liszt Academy of Music at the age of 12. Now he's weaving new dreams, and has good reason to believe that these, too, will come true. His teacher is the Kossuth Prize-winning Miklós Szenthelyi, who has carried forward the traditions of the legendary Hungarian school of violin playing for decades while nurturing artists of the calibre of fellow Kossuth Prize winner Kristóf Baráti and József Lendvay. Sándor is still at the start of his career, which all the signs indicate will soon take a steep upward curve. He never considered what he might do if he wasn't a musician - for him, music is his life. We have the chance to hear him here as soloist for a performance of one of the true virtuoso violin concertos in the repertoire, and will also get to know everything about Sándor and his instrument with the cooperation of Filibert, our rapscallion guide with a burning thirst for knowledge and a penchant for splitting hairs.
