The noted prose writer László Darvasi has also written books for children. The first was the hugely successful novel Trapiti, which was soon followed by Trapiti és a borzasztó nyúl. Trapiti is a strange little creature who gets lost in the Kavicsvár (Pebble Castle). He doesn't know where he comes from, doesn't recognise his past and doesn't know who his parents are. Even so, he is able to teach the residents of the little town, who are facing increasing danger, how 'to trapiti'. The growin...g problems eventually lead to the first pumpkin casserole war. But what does 'to trapiti' mean? For example, to be able to magically move from one story to another. To teach an influential mayor how to fold paper hats. To ensure the wolf doesn't eat Little Red Riding Hood because she isn't tasty enough. Or her grandmother. The 3 emeletes Mesekönyv tells stories for older children. How can a children's tale manage to talk about love in relation to a hole in the ground and the heap of earth next to it? Are there some stories which are taboo, that it is not possible to tell, yet must be told? Is it possible to explain the values of the 20th century by telling a story about the worst possible human experiences. How can we tell a story about children getting divorced?
All of these books are about what a story is, and its intention. No matter how simple the answer, making it happen is hard. All a story wants is to do is help us float around a little more cosily in this huge, baffling and often inhospitable world. And to help us learn more about ourselves. When we tell a story, we simply want to be at home. By the end, at the expense of all kinds of adventures, we just want to be safe. The story cannot help it if this doesn't always succeed.
