The brass section of the symphony orchestra is its shiniest and most sparkling in both appearance and sound. The virtuoso trumpet, the soft-toned French horn, the slide trombone and the growling tuba all contribute their distinctive colours to the orchestral palette. Their most important common feature is not that they are made of a thin metallic, primarily copper alloy, but that each produces sound through the vibration of the player's lips placed against a funnel-shaped mouthpiece. Tubes of di...fferent lengths are required to produce sounds of different pitches. In the case of the trombone, a telescopic slide mechanism varies the length of the instrument to change the pitch. The other brass instruments were equipped with valves a little over a century ago, which, when engaged, increase the length of tubing into which air is permitted, allowing all kinds of notes and melodies to be played.
