In the first part of our series, the virtuoso company from the musical actor course of the University of Theatre and Film Arts presented the archaic forms of the musical stage and the early periods of romantic stories, starting with the natural art forms of tribal societies and ending with the endlessly varied worlds of the liturgical and secular genres on European stages. The events inexorably led to genres being defined and grouped, with the end result being the birth of opera, together ...with the first golden age of the musical theatre, the opera culture of the 17th and 18th centuries and the glorious revelry of the Baroque period, something almost impossible to conceive of today. Raise an imaginary hand if you knew that during some seasons in Venice, opera was being performed in 42 different locations around the city at once. And who knew that comic opera developed out of the intermezzos performed during intervals of serious operas? Or that nearly one thousand operas were created from the 27 librettos written by Pietro Metastasio? Or who the buffonistas were? That foire, ballad opera, singspiel and zarzuela are all subsets of the genre of opera? Who would have thought that for contemporary Europeans during that period, opera was the equivalent of television, radio and the internet - in short, that it was the media?
Baroque opera is perhaps the richest and most creative manifestation of the European spirit. Those who join us will see for themselves as we venture across two centuries: from the brilliant Monteverdi to the "divine” Mozart.
