Although winter has its own beauties, spring is probably the season whose arrival we await most eagerly here in the temperate zone. The cold and the darkness diminish day by day to give way to a gradual warming as nature dons its green clothes. It is no coincidence that dozens of well-known (and lesser-known) folk customs are connected to the joyful event, and the children's groups of the Kistarcsa Pannonia Dance Ensemble, together with their adult helpers, are waiting for spring with music and dance, and singing and fun.
It is no accident either that there was a period in history when March was considered the beginning of the year: our ancestors had also noticed the significant changes taking place in the world around us. And not just out there: we experience the beneficial effects of nature's awakening on our bodies and souls year after year. Arriving with the close of the carnival season, it was the month of fasting before the advent of spring and named after Mars, the god of war. On Saint Gregory's Day, stude...nts would commemorate Pope Gregory I, the patron saint of schools, with cheerful, costumed processions, during which new pupils were also enticed into the temple of knowledge. As a popular Hungarian saying has it, "Alexander, Joseph and Benedict bring the warm weather in their bags," referring to the three saint's days that fall on the following week, when the weather here usually starts to improve. Tradition also holds that it is on the Feast of the Annunciation on 25 March that plants grow new buds and spring arrives for certain. The aim of the Kistarcsa Pannonia Dance Ensemble and its "Barkóca" and "Berkenye" children's groups is to pass on the dance traditions of the Carpathian Basin to the new generations. Taking on the role of storyteller and singer will be Krisztina Benedek, while the host will be Zoltán "Batyu” Farkas, a legendary figure in the world of Hungarian folk dance.
