The saxophone is a wind instrument played with a single-reed mouthpiece. It has a conical brass body flared into a bell at the tip, with tone holes opened and closed with padded keys. It comes in many sizes, from the sopranissimo to the subcontrabass, though the most common are the soprano, alto and tenor saxophones. It is used primarily in jazz, popular music and military bands, but is also encountered in symphonic works and operas. It bears the name of the Belgian instrument maker Adolph...e Sax, who invented the family of instruments in 1842.
