The main characters in this series are the tools used to make music: the instruments. Listeners can get to know them through authentic live music and the help of the musicians who play it. This semester, the instruments familiar from Hungarian folk traditions will again be introducing themselves. The clarinet became traditional in three different roles: as a member of Gypsy ensembles, in village brass bands, and as a shepherd's instrument played by itself. In Gypsy music, the clarinettist plays ...the melody together with the prímás - the lead violinist - in such a way that he also provides an accompanying role, combining the chords into his nimbly-moving part. Among shepherds and peasants, the clarinet has, starting from the late 19th century, mainly been introduced through the fashion of having a local brass band. The instrument known by village folk as the tárogató has a reed like a clarinet's, but is shaped like an oboe, that is, with a conical bore. Its lower register has a metallic and trumpet-like sound, and its upper-register is soft and plaintive. Its repertoire consists of folk songs, particularly slow melodies with a loose rhythm.
