Hungarian violinist József Joachim (1831-1907), better known to the world as Joseph Joachim, the German spelling of his name, was not only one of the 19th century's greatest virtuosos of the instrument: his contemporaries also admired him as a composer, as he had studied under Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. In addition, he played a prominent role in the European music world of his era as the founding director of Berlin's Royal Academy of Musical Performing Art, as the first violinist for the... Joachim Quartet that bore his name, as a conductor, and most of all, as an adviser on composition and performance technique to many contemporary composers, including Johannes Brahms, Antonín Dvořák and Max Bruch. But the indubitable fact that Joachim remains a familiar name to countless music lovers today is due to a significant - perhaps the most significant - chapter in his already busy and full life: his many years of personal and artistic. After the two first met in April 1853, it was only slowly, step by step, that their initially entirely professional relationship between two artists evolved into a close and intimate friendship.
On 15 August 2007, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Joachim's death, Hamburg's Johannes Brahms Museum mounted a small special exhibition, parts of which we are presenting here in Budapest again on the occasion of the Brahms Marathon. This exhibition attempts to show visitors, in a very succinct format, certain key stages in the artistic friendship between Brahms and Joachim, with all of its ups and downs, all the way up to their temporary estrangement.
The exhibition running in conjunction with the Brahms Marathon will be open between 22 January and 1 February and again between 8 and 27 February.
