Born and still living in the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), István Szilágyi is an important master of Hungarian prose not merely in the regions bordering the country but within the worldwide Hungarian diaspora. With his 1975 novel Kő hull apadó kútba, he wrote himself indelibly into the history of Hungarian literature at one stroke, following this up with important works including Agancsbozót (1990) and the large-scale historical novel Hollóidő (2001), which was published in Hun...gary. As can be seen from the dates of publication, Szilágyi has endured some severe trials in his personal life, the trajectory of his career as a writer under Romania's dictatorship is not exactly marked by a high level of productivity. Instead, his works reached their definitive form only through long years of meticulous labour. From this, it follows that his densely woven novels, with their authentic language and sparse range of literary devices, captivate the reader with the immoveable and monumental power of a statue hewn from a single block.
Just as this Kossuth Prize-winning writer and editor of the literary journal Helikon brooks no compromise in his work as one of the outstanding masters of the Hungarian language, so his activities as a literary and public figure have in recent decades been similarly characterised by the same rigorous and consistent moral approach. In addition, this superb writer is also an excellent oral storyteller - and it is indisputably the good fortune of Hungarian literature that an eye affliction prevented him from being hired as a locomotive driver in the 1950s. Having already appeared in an earlier edition of Literarium, the jazz trio of The Contemporary Music Ensemble of the Budapest Festival Orchestra will be on hand to paint an authentic musical backdrop for a Müpa presentation sure to incorporate plenty of humour.
