Multifaceted in terms of creativity, unmistakably original, tirelessly prolific and full of sparkling wit. While these descriptions are far from enough to do justice to László Márton, born in 1959, and his exceptionally varied body of literary work, which has earned him the Laurel Wreath of the Republic of Hungary, along with the Attila József, Sándor Mária, Milán Füst and Janus Pannonius Prizes, they at least get to the heart of the matter. The astonishingly rich oeuvre of Literarium's January ...guest has been taking shape on a grand scale since the early '80s, with its elements running along parallel, yet equally important, artistic lines: novels, plays, novellas, translations, essays and studies have come one after the other, and invariably at a high level of standards. His original dramatic works and translations - including his plays The Ambitious One, which was produced in both Cluj-Napoca and Eger, and the Roman Cadaver Synod - are regularly performed in theatres in Budapest and elsewhere in Hungary, and his inventive translations of Goethe and Heinrich von Kleist (Faust and Michael Kohlhaas) have caused literary experts and readers alike to rank him among the finest interpreters of the German classics. Of his approximately 20 published books, the ones that have perhaps won him the greatest acclaim are The True Story of Jacob Wunschwitz (1997, 2005), Shady High Street (1999), The Brotherhood Trilogy (2001-2003) and Minerva's Hiding Place (2006). This evening with a writer known both as a giant of the theatre and a producer of highly influential works is surely an unmissable one, but it will no doubt be made even more unforgettable with the addition of actress Andrea Fullajtár and a surprise musical treat from Bori Rutkai.
