László Végel was a member of the first generation of the Vojvodina New Symposium journal and exploded onto the Hungarian literary scene in 1967 with the publication of his novel Memoirs of a Pimp, since when he has produced countless outstanding novels, speeches, essays, plays and diaries. The publication of three of his earlier novels as The Novi Sad Trilogy in 1993 was followed in 2000 by an essay-style novel concerning his experiences in the Novi Sad NATO bombing, Exterritorium. The writer was bound by a thousand threads to his homeland and decided against escaping the area even in the worst moments of the Yugoslavian war. This loyalty and the areas where his work is set give him a genuinely European viewpoint and help place him in the highest category of writers. His most recent work include Atonement, a diary novel set in Berlin (2012), the Novi Sad city novel Neoplanta (2013) and the Balkan Beauty (2015), all of which vividly reflect local events and draw on his experiences of the wider world.
Alongside his writing, Végel also manages to play an active part in Hungarian Vojvodina public life: his diaries, written between 1991 and 2014, were published last year with a strong focus on his role in public life, as well as covering all aspects of literature. With his sense of humour and good nature, which shines through all his work, this Budapest evening with László Végel promises to be a rare and special event, full of thoughtful, intellectual adventures, colourful literary tales and enjoyable entertainment.
