The closing evening of this Literarium season features a poet who shuns the spotlight and the stage, for whom all efforts at taking centre stage, proving one's self or showing off are alien. This reclusive and shy temperament, however, conceals an extraordinarily rich, multi-layered poetic world profound in experience. Winner of the Artisjus Grand Prize in 2013, Péter Kántor is one of the most sensitive and most dependable of our contemporary poets.
A career trajectory spanning 14 high-qu...ality volumes of verse, from Kavics (1976) to Köztünk maradjon (2012), constitutes an entirely individual, incomparably lyrical body of work. Kántor's verse filters the defining legacy of his greatest influences, Attila József and István Kormos, refining that legacy into a sovereign poetic world and reinterpreting it according to the timely, modern requisites of the poet's role. The unmistakeable tone of Kántor's poetry thus becomes a powerful, incomparable synthesis of implacable perfectionism, traditionalism resting on respect for his predecessors, and lyrical modernism dramatising the condition of 21st century man in the language of the age. It is a kind of crutch helping us to live our lives, which we can confidently lean on through the sorrows and joys of our everyday existence. This glance into Kántor's lyrical world will be made even more memorable this evening by the presence of the extraordinarily talented young accordionist András Pagonyi. An evening not to be missed by literary connoisseurs!
